Relevant Legal Statutes on Gambling in Washington*

The minimum legal gambling age in Washington depends upon the gambling activity:

  • Land-Based Casinos: 21/18 depending on the casino
  • Poker Rooms: 18
  • Bingo: 18
  • Lottery: 18
  • Pari-Mutuel Wagering: 18

Washington slot machine casino gambling exists at tribal casinos based on the lottery’s scratch ticket games in electronic form. This unique form of video lottery terminal (VLT) slot machines makes Washington slot machines unique in the U.S. All other U.S.-based VLTs are lottery draw games, not from lotteries other game: scratch tickets.

Each of the 29 federally recognized American Indian tribes negotiated state-tribal compacts with the state to offer gambling at tribal casinos. However, the state and these tribes could not agree on whether Vegas-style slot machines should be legal in Washington.

Scratch-based VLTs resulted from early negotiations of state-tribal gaming compacts. This impasse resolution led to creating a secondary lottery system for VLTs at tribal casinos. The state lottery was a model for the Tribal Lottery System (TLS).

Draw-based VLTs create tickets at the time of the bet using random number generators (RNGs). Scratch-based VLTs know in advance the result of each wager. Put another way, the outcome of each scratch-based VLT bet is pre-determined. Bets do not require an RNG.

Another technical difference between lottery draw tickets and scratch tickets is how many of them can exist. For example, there can be as many draw tickets as players are willing to buy. However, lotteries create only a limited number of scratch tickets but, hopefully, enough for a busy night at Washington tribal casinos.

All negotiated tribal-state compacts also have other legal restrictions for their scratch-based VLT-style slot machines. These limits have been expanding over time as part of this state’s dynamic gaming industry. The requirements are:

  • Allows replaying of credits won
  • No handles
  • No mechanical spinning wheels
  • A minimum payout return (see below)
  • $5 maximum wager on 85% on VLTs
  • $20 maximum wager on 15% of VLTs
  • Cap of 2,500 VLT machines per tribe

A small group, carousel, or bank of VLTs pull virtual scratch tickets from the same set. Each small group uses a different set. Given these tickets are of a finite number, running out of tickets in a set means only a few VLTs are out of them before switching to a new set of tickets. This switching should take place nearly instantaneously, likely not causing any small group of VLTs to shut down temporarily.

Have fun, be safe, and make good choices!

Craps is the most objectively intimidating table game on the floor. The first time I set foot in a casino, my dad gave me the low-down on the etiquette and superstitions that are heavilyprevalent at the craps table, and honestly, I was afraid to even stand 5 feet away in fear of ruining someone’s streak.

Why Are Table Game Sok But Slot Machines Are Not Lyrics

The game may seem difficult and fast-paced, which may discourage new players. But even pros had to start somewhere, and going into your first game with a bit of knowledge about the game can makeall the difference.

The game involves a shooter, those betting on the shooter, and those betting against the shooter. Those betting on the shooter will place their bets on the “pass line.” Those betting against willplace their bets on the “don’t pass line.” For reference as I talk about the actual game play, Google a picture of a craps table so you can familiarize yourself with the layout and what eachsection means.

The shooter picks two dice from a bunch, and places their bet on the pass/don’t pass line. Following that, the other players place their own bets on the pass/don’t pass line. Again, placing a beton the pass line means that you are betting on the shooter’s roll, and the don’t pass line means that you are betting against it.

After bets are placed, the shooter rolls their dice. The first roll is referred to as the come out roll. This is where the game can start to seem a little bit hectic. If the roll is a 7 or 11,the pass wins. If the come out is a 2, 3, or 12, it is referred to as ‘craps’ and the don’t pass wins.

If the come out is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, that number becomes the ‘point’. The object now is to bet on whether or not you think a 7 will be rolled before the point. If the shooter rolls the pointbefore they roll a 7, the shooter and everyone on the pass wins. If a 7 is rolled before the point is rolled, the don’t Pass wins.

There is much more to this game play, but those are the basics, and hopefully will encourage you to jump in on a game the next time you are at a casino.

Etiquette and Superstition

Of all the gambling superstitions, the ones surrounding the craps table are probably the most closely followed and believed. Whether you are a superstitious gambler, or you are just a littlestitious, keep these in mind when walking up to the craps table. As always, be mindful and respectful of these superstitions during game play.

  • “It” – No, craps players are not referring to the Stephen King novel when they say they don’t want “it” to show. Saying the number 7 at the craps table is considered extremely unlucky. Someplayers will even refer to the number 7 as “the devil.”
  • Don’t touch the shooter when they are on a streak or after a good roll.
  • The dice should not touch anyone else’s hands on a roll.
  • Again, be mindful of where your hands are. Some tables’ crews will remind players of this before a roll, shouting “watch your hands.”

And remember, with any game you play, be humble about your wins and losses. No one likes a gloater or a whiner.
